Stay Fit for the Holidays
by BOB Gear on December 15, 2016 in Athletics & Training
Holidays are a time for spreading cheer, spending time with loved ones and could mean putting on a few extra pounds. With all that traveling, shopping and eating, there’s not much extra time for work outs. That’s why we’ve created a guide to help you stay on track with your fitness goals during the holiday season.
Step Outside
Just because it’s chilly doesn’t mean you can’t go on a run or explore the great outdoors. Plan a fun outdoor activity that doesn’t take away from the festivities, but allows you to get some exercise. Take a fun hike to a coffee shop, or a quick jog around the neighborhood to gaze at all the holiday decorations.
Sign up for a Holiday Race
There are plenty of holiday-themed races that allow you to bring your little ones along. Some runs even suggest you dress up to get into the spirit of the season. Participating in a stroller friendly 5K or mini marathon is the perfect way to get in your exercise while celebrating with family—but remember to keep safety in mind. Be sure to check out our safety tips for winter outings.
Set a Goal
Holding yourself accountable is much easier when you set specific goals instead of vague guidelines. Write down how many miles you want to walk or jog before the New Year and track your progress throughout the month. If you’re not doing as well as you’d hoped, add some quick exercises or outdoor activities to your holiday to-do list.
Focus on Full-body Workout
Your time is limited during the holiday season, so you’ll want to choose exercises that really work the whole body. Instead of focusing on just arms or legs, try some cardio or circuit training. You can get back to individualized workouts after the busy time of year is over.
Get Everyone Involved
One way to ensure you don’t slack off this season is to get everyone involved in your fitness routines. Have family coming into town? Plan something fun that requires light exercise. Whether it’s caroling from door to door or simply walking around the block to see all the lights, add some creativity into your holiday itinerary.
The trick to staying in shape during the holidays is making your work outs fun, and involving the whole gang. If you don’t feel like you’re sacrificing family time in order to squeeze in exercise, you’ll be more likely to follow through.
